Tonight Is Goodbye

Buckinghamshire band Tonight Is Goodbye have already accomplished much in their two year history. The band was picked by judges from Ernie Ball to play on the 2006 Taste of Chaos tour, after which they recorded an EP with producer John Mitchell (Funeral for a Friend, Enter Shikari) entitled "The Birds and the Bees" for Tree Brain Records.

This band is one for fans of Taking Back Sunday or the Foo Fighters, with each of their tracks infused with crunchy guitars and a driving drum beat to form melodic and sharp pop songs. Frontman Ant West fills each song with catchy lyrics ready made for sing alongs, and from the live performances that the band has had across the UK it looks like the fans are more than willing to comply.

The band is currently writing and recording, set to tour again at the end of the month and self release a full length later on this year. Check out the video and song below...

The Guns

Welsh band The Guns have made a huge impact their first year out, taking their brand of Andrew WK level energy across the UK to play the main stage at the Full Ponty festival (a UK version of Bamboozle) and winning a nomination for a Welsh music award.

The band formed soon after lead singer Alex Wiltshire's old band When Reason Sleeps broke up, with bandmate Tom Coburn staying with him and Adam Turner joining from the band Mid Storey Down and Kob from My Little Murder. The group soon recorded a three song demo and landed an opening gig for Lost Prophets across the UK. They have a full length due out later this year, check out the video below, their 3-song EP can be picked up through their myspace page.

Reverend and the Makers

It seems that at least one household in Sheffield has become a breeding ground for talent as of late, with the McClure family flirting with buzz band Arctic Monkeys with Chris McClure gracing the cover of their release "Whatever People Say I Am, That Is What I'm Not", and then with brother John starting the band Reverend and the Makers.

The band has been around since 2005, forming out of McClure's previous bands Judan Suki and 1984. The groups sound owes as much to Manchester as they do to their home town, combining indie guitar hooks with electronic funk to produce a sound that comes out somewhere between Franz Ferdinand and the Happy Mondays.

After a long stint hosting the club night Reverend Soundsystem at Sheffield club The Plug the band signed to Wall of Sound Records, which they then followed up with a tour of the UK. Their debut album "The State of Things" was released September 17th of last year in the UK. They are now finishing up that tour and set to play Coachella in April, check out the video and songs below.

The Ting Tings

Barely a year after forming the Manchester band The Ting TIngs are already one of the biggest buzz bands in the UK for 2008. The duo formed from previous incarnations TKO and Dear Eskiimo, both groups involving members Katie White and Jules De Martino.

The group is already gaining comparisons to the Gossip and Girls Aloud, although judging from their first single "That's Not My Name" they owe as much to Toni Basil. The single is an infectious number infused with handclaps and White's sharp sarcastic vocals.

The band caught a huge break at the Glastonbury festival last year when BBC DJ Steve Lamacq introduced the band's set by calling them "the next big thing", they have since played a string of sold out shows and are currently on the NME tour. Their first limited edition single quickly sold out of the 500 disc pressing, their next single "Great D.J." is due out March 3rd through Columbia, with the full length album due out April 14th.

Fighting With Wire

Derry band Fighting With Wire is proving that all the good band names aren't taken, and that a band can live up to the promise of their name. Their live shows have a reputation for being explosive events, with lead guitarist Cahir O'Doherty (formerly of the band Jetplane Landing) aggressively jerking around onstage, punctuating his vocals with a sharp edge.

Their debut album is full of hard charging, riff-driven rock that never loses its crisp clarity through the aggression in each song. Check out the song "Everyone Needs A Nemesis" on their Myspace page, "Man vs Monster" comes out March 10th through Small Town Records.

Driving By Night

Driving By Night's sound could be called the cool older brother to bands Coldplay or the Killers, the band that has actually lived through the heartache and yearning that the latter bands write songs about. The 5 piece hails from Belfast, Ireland, and share more in common musically with fellow countrymen The Frames or Damien Rice than with their more popular English counterparts.

They are currently finishing up their debut album, having worked with producer Rupert Christie (Lou reed, U2, Green Day). It's due out sometime in March of this year, the band is still unsigned so order it directly through their website.

Their first full length out just today, this 5-piece band from Yorkshire has already been selling out venues in the UK. The band has received a huge amount of buzz from their first single "You and Me", a favorite of BBC One DJs Zane Lowe and Jo Whiley. The follow up single "Just For Tonight" evokes 80's tinged pop aiming for "Mr. Brightside" infectiousness, due in no small part to singer George Craig's overt attempt to capture the sweeping catchy nature of the aforementioned tune.

The band's first full length album was produced by Steve Lillywhite, who previously worked with U2 and is out through Vertigo records. They are about to embark on a support tour with the Pigeon Detectives. Check out the video and song below...

At a time when the dance-punk sound seems to be getting stale it's refreshing to see a group take the traditional elements of the genre and come up with something completely fresh. Hand claps? Check. Horns? Check. Slightly drug-induced sound? Check. Same old rehash of Yaz? Nope.

Foals is a 5-piece out of the Oxford, UK, that took the "music to make girls dance" credo and spun it into something actually worth dancing to during their manic live shows. After seeing them open of Does It Offend You, Yeah? in Barcelona I wasn't sure how their energy would come across on their LP, and after hearing the songs surface I wasn't reassured. The vibrant sound and immediacy of their beats came across as a bit droning and dull in the mix by Dave Setik from TV On The Radio.

Their full length album "Antidotes" is due out March 24th via Sub Pop records, and loses Setik's mix in favor of one that reportedly captures the feeling of their live shows. Check out the video for "Baloons" and the songs below.

Scouting For Girls

Despite the stalkeresque name, Scouting for Girls take their name from the 1908 Boy Scout manual "Scouting for Boys", a wise move considering the legions of screaming young fans at their shows across the UK. The London trio is led by self-proclaimed Chief Scout Roy Stride on vocals and keyboards, Assistant Patrol Leader Greg Churchouse on bass, and Quartermaster Peter Ellard on drums.

Their sound is somewhere between the Frames and Spoon in their combination of bouncing piano driven pop melodies and earnestly wistful vocal stylings, bringing to mind the best qualities of both bands in singles such as "Keep On Walking" and "It's Not About You" from the self titled debut. Fans of The Feeling should definitely check this album out. They are currently on a sold out tour through the UK to support the album, which is still only available as an import.

Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong

London based band Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong are former Pippettes drummer Joe Lean (Joe Van Moyland), guitarist Tommy D (the brother of Rose Pippette), drummer Bummer Jong (stand in drummer for the Pippettes), bassist Panda, and guitarist Dom O'Dare. Their jangly guitar riffs and catchy vocals landed them a gig opening up for Babyshambles and an upcoming tour opening for The Cribs.

New Heartsrevolution Song!

One of the cutest bands out there (until the dance off with Mates of State is judged), Heartsrevolution is an LA transplant that recently landed in NYC. Our loss. The real-life couple of Leyla Safai and Ben Pollock have been doling out both frozen treats and electro-pop tunes from their retro-styled ice cream trucks since 2006.

They've released two vinyl singles, both of which quickly sold out, featuring It-Girl "is she, isn't she grounded?" Cory Kennedy on vocals for the song Prism Vocals. They have a full length album coming out 3/11 through Franki Chan's label IHeartComix, check out the Lauren Flax remix of the single "C.Y.O.A." below and check out their myspace page for upcoming appearances.

These New Puritans

"Beat Pyramid,", the newest release from Southend's These New Puritans, has been drawing comparisons to the Fall and Joy Division, but bears more in common with their recent electro-rock comrades The Klaxons. Give it another two months before Urban Outfitters signs them up, they're one of the bands that is supposed to break really big in the US in '08. Hopefully this signals bands starting to borrow more from Mark E. Smith rather than the Happy Mondays, we were getting tired of the phrase "MDMAzing".The album came out 1/28 in the UK, and arrives in the US on 3/18 through Domino.

Check out the track "Elvis" to hear the newest single from this band, full of catchy bass riffs and random lyrics about the Memphis singer. Side note: the band just did the 15 minute (!!!) song "Navigate Navigate" for the Dior Homme runway show. Incredible stuff.
